Frequently Asked Questions
  • When do I apply to get in to the Program?
We accept applications once a year, during the fall semester. Students should be juniors enrolled in ACCT 327.

  • What are the minimum requirements to get into the Program?
A 3.25 cumulative GPR (with at least 60 hours), junior classification, and A's & B's in ACCT 229 & ACCT 230. Some exceptions are made for transfer students and students transferring from other majors.

  • What do I need to do to get in to graduate school?
Make good grades (above a 3.0 GPR at the very minimum, especially in the last 60 hours before applying for graduate school).

  • When do I have to file a Graduate Degree Plan?
You will file your Graduate Degree Plan during the Fall of your 5th year. You will be given more specific instructions during your graduate year.

  • How do I know which courses to use?
First, look at the degree plan you did with your Professional Program advisor during the fall of your senior year. This is a starting point; however, each department and the Professional Program have specific requirements that must be met. Instructions for completing the Graduate Degree Plan are provided in your handbook. Certain courses with a graduate number (MGMT 643 and 680) apply to the undergraduate degree and may not be included on the Graduate Degree Plan unless pre-approved by the Professional Program Office.

  • How do I apply to sit for the CPA exam?
Go to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy's website (www.tsbpa.state.tx.us). The application of Intent must be filed several weeks before you plan to sit for the exam.

  • When can I take the examination/What are the requirements?
The complete listing of all the requirements is available in a brochure from the State Board on TSBPA's website or in the Professional Program office. The State Board requires candidates for the CPA exam to have completed 150 hours, including 36 hours of accounting courses, by the end of the semester prior to sitting for the exam. For example, if you want to sit for the exam during the spring (your last semester), you must have completed the requirements by the end of the previous fall semester.
The 36 hours of accounting courses that are required include ACCT 229 & ACCT 230 (the introductory courses). There are limitations on which courses count for the other 30 hours, but all Professional Program students will have taken the following courses for CPA exam credit:

ACCT 327  ACCT 405
ACCT 328  ACCT 407
ACCT 329  ACCT 427

Other courses that may apply include the following, although this list is not all-inclusive:

ACCT 607  ACCT 628
ACCT 611  ACCT 647
ACCT 612  ACCT 651
ACCT 613  ACCT 680
ACCT 621  ACCT 684
