L. Murphy Smith, D.B.A., CPA

Dr. L. Murphy Smith, CPA is a Professor in the Accounting Department at Texas A&M University. He serves as director of A&M's Internal Auditing Program. Dr. Smith has worked as a faculty resident in the auditing area for an international accounting firm. With over 100 articles published in refereed journals, numerous other papers and monographs, 18 coauthored books, and over 100 competitive papers presented at academic conferences, he ranks in the top 1 percent of accounting scholars in the United States, according to recently published guides of research productivity among accounting professors. His key research areas are ethics, information technology, and international accounting. Dr. Smith has provided expert witness consulting for a number of legal cases on matters such as accounting ethics, intellectual property, international accounting standards, business valuation, and mergers and acquisitions.

Among the journals in which he has published are the following: Contemporary Accounting Research; Accounting Horizons; Journal of Information Systems; Journal of Business Ethics; Research on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting; Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance; Issues in Accounting Education; Advances in International Accounting; International Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Performance Evaluation; International Journal of Accounting; Internal Auditing; and The CPA Journal. His work has been cited in various news media, including Fortune, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2002 he provided expert witness testimony in Washington, D.C. at a Congressional Hearing concerning business and accounting ethics. In 2003 he served on the Ethics Task Force for the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy.

Dr. Smith is involved in a number of service roles in the university and the local community. He has served as a faculty senator and as a faculty representative on the Texas A&M University Honor Council. He is a member of TAMU Mentors, an organization of faculty dedicated to helping students in their academic and personal progress. He and his wife are members of Grace Bible Church of College Station, Texas. Dr. Smith serves on the advisory board to Hope Pregnancy Centers of the Brazos Valley. He and his wife, Kathy, have been married 29 years and have three children.
