Accounting for Creed

CREED, a little band from Florida has taken the world by storm. What makes them tick? Who can account for their phenomenal success? Initially, the band consisted of four members: Scott Stapp (vocals), Mark Tremonti (guitars and back up vocals), Scott Phillips (Drums), and ex-bassist Brian Marshall, who was forced to leave the band. Due to a rocky relationship with his father, Scott left home at age 17. His father felt rock music was an evil influence and banned it. Like most things, music can be used for good or evil. The Bible says that "the love of money" is a root of all kinds of evil (I Timothy 6:10), but money itself can obviously be used for good or evil. So it is with rock music. Some rock groups make the world a better place; some don't.

Scott moved to Tallahassee because a dead rocker (Jim Morrison of the Doors) whose music Scott admired had once lived there. Hopefully Creed won't self destruct like Jim Morrison who died tragically in Paris in 1971 (his remains are buried in the Pere-Lachaisse cemetery). In any case, God works in mysterious ways. In Tallahassee Scott met an old high school friend, Mark Tremonti. Scott and Mark decided to form a band. Later they added Scott Phillips and Brian Marshall. John Kurzweg helped them recored their first album, My Own Prison, in a basement "studio" for the amazingly small sum of $6,000. CREED sent their demo tapes to a few local radio stations in Florida, and quite a few of them liked it. CREED's first hit single, My Own Prison, hit the air waves, followed by Torn, then followed by One, then  followed by yet another single, What's This Life For. All made it to number one, a record for a debut album. The album stayed on Billboards top 100 album chart for over two years. My Own Prison also won Billboards best hard music album award for 1997.

CREED's second album, Human Clay, was recorded the same way as My Own Prison. The album was released in 1999, and was widely anticipated by CREED fans across the Globe. The album included a number one hit single, Higher followed by What If and then  With Arms Wide Open which inspired Scott Stapp to start a "With Arms Wide Open Foundation," to help fund low income children and their parents to have an oppourtunity to experience NASA space camp in Florida.
