Star Wars: Accounting Implications

The most popular science fiction story of all time, Star Wars presents the classic conflict between good and evil. The first trilogy, Episodes 4 to 6 (1977, 1980, 1983), depicts the battle between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. The  Empire was personified in the Emperor's henchman, Darth Vader (aka Anakin Skywalker). The second trilogy, Episodes 1 to 3 (1999, 2002, 2005), shows the collapse of the Galactic Republic, the formation of the Galactic Empire, and how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader.  Millions of people have been captivated by Star Wars' high-tech futuristic setting, imaginative plot, fine acting, superb cinematography, powerful soundtrack, and fantastic special effects. The great battle is between the those who use "the Force" for good and their antagonists who tap into the "dark side." The battle is fought using various futuristic devices such as hand-held light sabers, robots, and massive star destroyers. Both sides are limited by their resources. This is where accounting plays a key role. In the centers of power, on Coruscant and numerous other worlds, the accountants are hard at work keeping track of production, inventory, cash flow, personnel, operating expenditures, and other financial matters. Needless to say, building a star destroyer requires a lot of planning and plenty of credits (i.e., cash!).
