CALL FOR PAPERS AND PROPOSALS

2008 Annual Meeting

Tuesday, March 4 to Saturday, March 8, 2008

Houston, Texas

The Southwestern Society of Economists (SSE) announces its annual meeting for March 4-8, 2008 in Houston, Texas in association with the 35th annual meeting of the Federation of Business Disciplines (FBD) (formerly SWFAD).  We invite and encourage each member to be involved in some capacity by:

1. Presenting a paper on a topic of interest to both academicians and practitioners.
2.  Submitting a paper for the 2008 Distinguished Paper Award.
3.  Serving as a session chair and/or paper discussant.
4.  Organizing an invited paper session.
5.  Organizing an invited panel or tutorial.
6.  Nomination for the 2008 SSE Outstanding Educator Award.

Note: All manner of participation must be communicated to the Program Chair electronically in Microsoft Word format and must be accompanied by a Program Participation Form. The deadline for all types of participation is October 6, 2007.

Presenting a paper on a topic in the economic discipline of interest to both academicians and practitioners

<>Submit a completed paper or an abstract of not more than 500 words with the following:  name, affiliation/university, postal address, telephone number/s, fax number and e-mail address/es.  Selection of your paper/abstract obligates you to serve as session chair and/or discussant.

Conditions for presentation: (1) All participants must register for membership in both the SSE and FBD (formerly SWFAD), and (2) presenters must email copies of their paper to their assigned discussants, session chairs and Program-Chair by February 1, 2008. Anyone scheduled to present or discuss a paper is obligated to notify the Session Chair or Program Chair IN ADVANCE if he/she cannot attend. Failure to comply with this stated SSE policy may: (a) bar that person from participation in the SSE annual meeting for one (1) year, and (b) preclude the consideration of the paper for publication in the Proceedings.

Serving as a session chair and/or paper discussant

Whether you are presenting or not, please participate by sending your name, position, affiliation/university, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. If you wish to serve as a Program Committee member, or as a session chair or discussant, please indicate your area(s) of interest. These possible areas of interest are listed at the bottom of the Participation Form which you can find towards the end of this announcement.

Submitting a paper for the Distinguished Paper Competition:

Members of the SSE are urged to submit papers for the 2008 Distinguished Paper Award (Economics) sponsored by the Irwin/McGraw Hill Company.  The winner traditionally receives recognition and a plaque from Irwin/McGraw Hill during the FBD banquet.  The winner is expected to present the paper during the 2008 SSE Annual Meeting.  Also, it will be automatically considered for publication in the Southwestern Economic Review (SER) with publication fees waived. Papers considered for this award should not have been published, presented, or under consideration for publication elsewhere.

In addition to the Distinguished Paper Award, awards will also be given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runner ups.

Those who wish to enter this competition must submit their paper electronically in Microsoft Word format to the Program Chair along with five (5) blind copies of their paper and one (1) detachable cover page with the author’s name, position, affiliation/university, complete address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address.  The paper must not be more than 30 double-spaced pages in length, including references.  

For Organizing an Invited Paper Session, or an Invited Panel or Tutorial:

Interested members may organize an Invited Paper Session, Invited Panel or Tutorial.  As an invited paper session, invited panel, or tutorial organizer, you are expected to: (a) invite 3 to 4 paper presenters along with 2 to 4 discussants, or 2 to 4 panelists, or a tutorial, (b) obtain abstracts of papers, abstracts of each panel members’ remarks, or abstract of the tutorial, (c) provide the Program Chair with the completed Submission Form and one copy of each abstract for review, and (d) serve as Session Chair/Panel Moderator for the session. 

Each abstract should contain paper title, name(s) of presenter(s), affiliation, address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address of each participant.  Organizers will be advised by November 13, 2007 whether the invited session/Panel/Tutorial proposal has been accepted.  The Program Chair will assist in assigning paper discussants where needed.  The organizer should coordinate with the Program Chair.

2007 Outstanding Educator Award

The Southwestern Society of Economists (SSE) is seeking nominations for the 2008 Outstanding Educator Award. Candidates for the award should have made contributions to the area of economic education as evidenced by innovative pedagogy, instructional research, teaching related presentations and/or workshops. The nominee/candidate must be a member of the SSE to be eligible for this award. The nominator should include a letter detailing why the nominee should receive the Association’s Outstanding Educator Award. This letter must include the name, affiliation, complete address, phone/fax number and e-mail address of both the nominator and the nominee. The candidate may, at his/her discretion, submit additional documentation in support of the nomination. The additional material should include three letters of recommendation, a statement (five copies) from the applicant describing his/her educational contributions (not exceeding 5 pages, typed/double spaced), and a recent vitae. The nominations and any supporting documents from the candidates must be received by the SSE Program Chair by October 6, 2007. The Program Chair will then forward the nominations received from the nominators and the documents received from the nominees to the committee consisting of the three most recent past presidents of the Southwestern Society of Economists for final selection of the award recipient.  

Paper Submission to the Southwestern Economic Review or to the Southwestern Economic Proceedings:

After your paper is presented during the annual meeting, you may want to revise and submit it to the Editorial Board of the Southwestern Economic Review (SER) who shall consider it for publication in the next issue. To be considered for publication in the SER, the paper must not currently be under review by another journal or have been previously published.  Manuscript Guidelines are inside the back cover of the current Review.  A copy of the Guidelines may also be requested from the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Edward M.
